In making paintings, I attempt to explore the natural beauty and nuance of the paint itself. The physicality of it often becomes the main subject. In order to expand the possibilities painting I use a large variety of traditional and unconventional supports and painting application techniques. I often work in a subtractive manner on the reverse side of glass or clear plastic. In doing so, the first and most immediate marks obscure future layers of paint and become the focal point, thus reversing the traditional method of applying paint.
Most of my work is nonrepresentational, but even the images that are not the recognizable imagery plays a secondary role. Ultimately this results in figures, or still-life objects, being reduced to simple shapes, drips or lines. From far away these shapes meld into the appearance of the object, but upon closer inspection they are just blobs of paint. The common theme that binds my works together is the idea of nothingness, as in existentialism and Eastern philosophy.
My paintings are inextricably linked to one another. Each painting has failures and successes, and this is just the nature of the way I have chosen to work. However, I use this to my advantage, taking previous failures and implementing them into future paintings, while also improving upon them. This website will serve to document works in progress, allowing viewers to see the evolution or perhaps devolution of the works as they take place.
While paint itself is simple, just a binder and colorant, the applications are limitless. My images are visceral explorations in paint, in attempt to uncover its hidden beauty.
